Perfume maceration – is it always necessary?

What is perfume maceration?

Maceration is the process by which a freshly prepared fragrance "rests" in dark vats or bottles so that the ingredients can better blend. It's a bit like aging wine – over time, the aromas gain depth and harmony. In classic perfumery, maceration lasts from several weeks to even several months.

• Purpose of maceration: aroma stabilization.

• Effect: notes become softer, chords (combinations of notes) more coherent.

Why don't our perfumes undergo maceration?

At My Smell, we create fragrances on an ongoing basis, in small batches – thanks to this:

• the bottle that arrives to you is always fresh,

• it doesn't lie in a warehouse for months, losing its intensity,

• you can be sure that you smell full of energy and freshness, and not a "stationary" composition.

This approach differs from European companies that produce huge batches of fragrances and let them mature before they reach stores.

And what about Arabic perfumes?

In Middle Eastern culture, perfumes are created on the fly – just like here. Oils and fragrances aren't macerated for months, but are immediately released for sale and consumption. As a result, Arabic fragrances are renowned for:

• extraordinary intensity ,

• freshness of oils ,

• very expressive character from the first spray.

• Myth: Without maceration, aromas are “immature.”

• Fact: fresh perfumes smell more intense and energetic.

• Myth: every fragrance needs long aging.
